The art of making tattoo-like intricate designs on the palms with henna is a special adornment for Hindu weddings as it is said to bring good fortune. Besides beautifying the hands it also has a cooling effect upon the nerve endings.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: 30-60 min

Here's How:

  1. Before applying you need to create the henna paste.
  2. Sift the dry henna leaves to remove any debris.
  3. Grind the leaves to fine dust.
  4. Add to it a hot mixture of tea (or coffee) and mustard oil until it has a mud-like firmness.
  5. You should cool it for at least 48 hours before applying.
  6. After the paste is ready take a plastic cone with a very fine key-hole at the end. (You can make it by folding a firm plastic sheet into a cone and cutting a thin hole at its end)
  7. Pour the paste into the cone and tie the broader end with a rubber band.
  8. Hold the cone in your right hand and gently squeeze the paste on the palm and start making patterns.
  9. Keep the palm horizontal and let the patterned-paste rest on it till dry.
  10. Warm it near the fire and leave it on for as long as it takes to get the stains deeper.
  11. When it is almost dry, dab a piece of cotton in sugar and lemon solution and apply lightly on the designs so it further darkens to a reddish-brown hue that can last for weeks.
  12. After 2-4 hours wash off your hands with plain water. Your palms will have those beautiful brown tattoos for several weeks.

Tips:

  1. Wash your hands properly before applying. Be patient if you are doing the intricate sketch or if you are waiting for the paste to dry.
  2. If you find the process of sifting and grinding the leaves cumbersome, get a ready-made herbal pack of henna powder. Adding scented henna oil to the mixture makes a better paste.
  3. Let loose your imagination and try out varied designs. You may also consult a book of Mehndi pattern.
