Part 1: Hindu Icons & Denigrating Designs
Hindu deities have
been deposed to the shit pot! When in July 2000, a proactive US Hindu organization
protested against Hindu gods and goddesses being emblazoned on footwear, little
did they know they are yet to see the nadir.
Holy
Shit Pot!
It all started on November 16, 2000, when the 'watchdog group' American Hindu
Anti-Defamation Coalition (AHAD) discovered that sanitary ware manufacturer
Sittin' Pretty Design were
selling toilet seats that sported images of Hindu deities Ganesha and Kali.
This Seattle-based
firm sells these products under their 'Sacred Seats' product line, primarily
through its Web site by targeting wholesalers and special orders.

|
"All
toilet seats are completely functional," the Web page reads, "Three
coats of waterproof clear coat protect the art as well as make the seats
completely washable with a non-abrasive cleaner." "Great as
unforgettable gifts, or as conversation pieces for your own home, these
toilet seats are guaranteed to add a smile to your bathroom décor,"
it says. Available in

three distinctly
different colors: bright red, royal blue, and black, these 'Sacred Seats' cost
$130.00 each.
Why
Market Such Products?
If you think that the product designer was utterly unaware of Hinduism or knew
little about Ganesha and Kali, you're wrong! The Sittin' Pretty Design Web site
clearly explains: "Kali, the fierce Hindu goddess, slays demons and liberates
you from the constriction of your negative thoughts. She destroys all obstacles
and frees you from the darkness of your fears." "Ganesha the Hindu
elephant god, removes all obstacles, destroys evil and provides you with protection
on your journey." Then, what was the motive behind marketing such products?
