Follow me on:

ShaniShani Amavasya is celebrated in honor of Shani Dev -one of the most popular deities that the Hindus pray to ward off evil and remove obstacles. People are under fear of evil from his planet - the Saturn - and anyone born under his influence is believed to at risk. Even the day named after him, Shanivara or Saturday, is sometimes considered inauspicious.

On Shani Amavasya, most people visit Shani temples and also observe a special fast similar to the Shanivar Vrat or Saturday fast. Many devotees, who are under the influence of Saturn in their horoscope, perform rituals like Shani yagna or homam on this day in order to appease Shani and smoothen the rough patches of life.

According to myths, Lord Shani oversees the "dungeons of the human heart and the dangers that lurks there." Stories about his evil influence abound. He is said to have chopped off Ganesha's head... Read more about Shani

Namasthe and thank u for all da educational information. Shani Amavasaya is something I was unaware of and I am currenly doing a Shani vrat. I have an interesting question. Have u ever heard of anyone removing their already hoisted bamboo jhundas, respraying dem green and den re-erecting same? This was done by a local pundit which I personally feel is soooo wrong. I also don’t support the metal pole idea which is done out of sheer laziness, and for convenience. If one has to use an already used item for God, {for convenience or fashion or laziness} then. Its equivalent to washing da old flag and using and freezing the persadh and re-offering it!!! Furthermore where are the 14 knots on the pole that come naturally on the bamboo? Either pray out of sincerety or don’t do it at all. Thanx and Namasthe.

Jai Shani Maharaj

Shani dev is also lord of righteousness and justice. He blesses people following the path of truth and (social) justice and punishes those who don’t.

for the current Samvatsar “PARABHAV” ( Vikram year 2070), Guru is King/President and Shani is Mantri/Secretary general. As such the combination promotes people with value system/ knowledge spread and Honesty…….
