March-April is New Years time for a number of Indian States based on their individual regional lunar calendars.
The southern Indian states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh will begin their new year - Ugadi. The Marathas will celebrate their new year Gudi Padwa, and the Sindhis will observe Cheti Chand, the coming of new year a day after.
This year, the Telugu, Kannada, and Marathi New Year fall on the same day - Monday, March 31, 2014 - the 16th day of the month of Chaitra, heralding the advent of spring. Cheti Chand falls on Tuesday, April 1, 2014.
