On the occasion of India's 67th Independence Day, which falls on August 15, we present the full text and English version of India's National Anthem and National Song. The National Anthem, "Jana Gana Mana," written by the Nobel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore cannot be indiscriminately sung or played randomly and the audience should stand in attention position whenever the anthem is sung or played live. Read the full text of the anthem and its English translation by Tagore himself, and download the official MP3 versions and instructions of playing the anthem and the song.

Besides the national anthem, there is also a national song of India. Called "Vande Mataram," it was composed in Sanskrit by Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay, and inspired the people of India in their struggle for freedom from British Rule. Vande Mataram was first published in Bankimchandra's novel "Ananda Math" in 1882, and was set to music by Tagore. Read the English translation of "Vande Mataram" by the great Hindu saint, patriot and litterateur Sri Aurobindo.

Jana Gana Mana was for praising of British Rule, it is not something that anyone would be proud of while Vande Matram was the real patriotic song of India, but Muslim League opposed it, because Islam is against patriotism.
