Vishwakarma Puja

By , About.com GuideSeptember 17, 2011

Follow me on:

Lord Vishwakarma is the presiding deity of all architects. He is the official builder of all the gods' palaces, and the designer of all celestial vehicles and weapons. Hindus widely regard Vishwakarma as the god of architecture and engineering.

September 17 every year is celebrated as Vishwakarma Puja -- a resolution time for workers and craftsmen to increase productivity and gain divine inspiration for creating novel products. This ritual usually takes place within the factory premises or shop floor, and the otherwise mundane workshops come alive with fiesta. Vishwakarma Puja is also associated with the buoyant custom of flying kites. This occasion in a way also marks the start of the festive season that culminates in Diwali.

In some Indian states, Vishwakarma Puja is also observed the day after Diwali. But, according to the Bengali calendar, Viswakarma Puja falls on Sunday, September 18 this year.

The next day of Diwali is celebrated as Bhaiya Dooj as well as with “Govardhan Pooja” and “Annakoot” where some of the Hindus offer 56 food items (Chappan Bhojan) to Lord Krishna (who had picked up the Govardhan Parvat on his little finger). You may get to enjoy this if you visit any big temple (like ISKCON Temple) on this day.

Vishwakarma Puja is a huge affair in the Industrial areas of Eastern India. It is the time to worship the tools and also marks the beginning of month long festivities that will culminate with Diwali. Vishwakarma was the divine architect and to celebrate a day to commerate his works is really interesting. I like the traditional way of celebrations, but modernism changes the ways of worshipping. However. food is always there and the grand feast on the day always fascinates me :)
