The Dance of Shiva and Sub Atomic Particles

Wednesday September 10, 2008
Lord Shiva veritably presided over the world’s largest experiment as scientists today sent the first beam of protons zooming at nearly the speed of light around the world’s most powerful particle accelerator at the CERN laboratory near Geneva in search of the 'God particle'.

Next to the 2m statue of the dancing Shiva or Nataraj at the European Center for Research in Particle Physics in Geneva is a plaque that explains the connection: "It is the clearest image of the activity of God which any art or religion can boast of" ... "Hundreds of years ago, Indian artists created visual images of dancing Shivas in a beautiful series of bronzes. In our time, physicists have used the most advanced technology to portray the patterns of the cosmic dance. The metaphor of the cosmic dance thus unifies ancient mythology, religious art and modern physics." Shiva may be the lord of destruction in Hindu mythology, but it's not the end of the world as some naysayers predicted about this big-bang experiment.

I think the Dance of Shiva is one of the most beautiful images of human civilization, and it’s good to see western science catching on to the deeper meaning.

Very interesting combination of science, mythology and art. It’s nice to see modern science validate ancient religious sciences.

Wasn’t the CERN laboratory in one of Dan Brown’s Books(not Divinci Code…drawing a blank, though) and weren’t they searching for the “God Particle” as well…the same thing which would be used by the Catholic Church to kill millions(in the book). Interesting read.

I love the Dancing Shiva image!

As for the search, via the scientific method, for a “God particle” ~ somewhere “out there” in “the world” … hmmmm … don’t know about that one.

Though building bridges between western science and the eastern spiritual traditions perhaps is a useful way of establishing a common language?

(5) Caryn Sobel says:

To me, there is a difference between a god, Shiva, knowing how and how not to dance the cosmic dance, and we humans thinking we have the same intelligence.I am still concerned about the particle collider’s possible effects, and hope that Shiva does not preside over a scene of human hubris at CERN.

don’t know on what ground they connect dance of lord shiva with particles (or so called uncertainity cosimc) dance!! i feel it absurd.

what is the connection between creation of the universe(big bang or whatever may be the cause)and the dance of the angry god when he lost his wife? In his rage he was not at all thinking of creation but most probably of destruction.

(8) Baj says:

God particle can only be revealed through God worship, not in a lab or a tunnel, howsoever long and applying physical laws only. One has to observe the eternal rules of the game. If you observe the physical laws on the physical level, learn to observe the spiritual laws on the spiritual level.
