15 Ayurvedic Uses of the Holy Basil (Tulsi)

Friday May 2, 2008
The 'tulsi' or holy basil is an important symbol in the Hindu religious tradition and is worshipped in the morning and evening by Hindus at large. A Hindu household is considered incomplete without a tulsi plant in the courtyard. Vaishnavites or believers of Lord Vishnu wear beaded necklaces made of tulsi stems. Apart from its religious significance, the tulsi is also an ayurvedic remedy for a number of common ailments.

More studies are revealing the health benefits of various forms of basil, of which the Tulasi (English name “Holy basil”, scientific names “Ocimum sanctum” or “Ocimum tenuiflorum”) is considered the healthiest.

In answer to Sarah asking what the English name of Holy Tulsi is I offer this answer. The Latin name is Ocimum sanctum, and the Ocimum plant is Basil. Tulsi is one of the Basil family and I do not know if it would grow here in England. I grow Ocimum (basil) both indoors and out in my garden, but the plants do not like cold. I hope that this helps.
