Cows are guileless in their behaviour and from them flow sacrifices…and milk and curds and butter. It acts as a surrogate mother by providing milk to human beings for the whole life. The cow is sacred for many reasons...more

So would you say that the cow is only sacred because it provides the food and milk to the people of india?

To all Hindus, cow is considered sacred because it was Lord Krishna’s favorite animal. And this wonderful animal is a considered as a ‘surragate’ ( In Hindi, cow is referred to as “go maata”) . Cow’s milk is fed to babies and grown people. Also. it is a non violent animal, will hurt only if it’s hurt. All this put together makes the cow sacred

To add to my first email response;ref. cow. To all Hindus, cow is a special animal because this animal was Lord Krishna’s favorite animal, and therefore regarded as sacred, and is also worshipped. And incidentally, science has proven that even cow dung is considered to be a disinfectant and useful in a few ways, in rural India.

The gestation period of a cow is 285 days which is ~ equal to 9 months and the gestation period of human is 266 days, hence cow is mammal which keeps its young one as human do and also its milk being very thin similar to human milk is the only substitute to human young one if mother is unable to feed its milk and hence it is considered as second mother after real mother and hence cow is sacred like mother.

(8) S Krishnan says:

It is from spiritual angle. SPiritual growth means cleansing our mind – making the mind devoid of ill thoughts. If we can make our mind totally thoughtless (free of the past, greed, lust, jealousy, etc) then we will be divine. What we eat is what also affects our mind besides what food we take in from our senses. (Just as alcohol make people lost their guards and become their natural selves – good or bad). THose who are aware of the thoughts that come into their mind are very watchful of what they eat, who prepared the food and in what condition for this very same reason.
Coww as an animal is supposed to be satvik, without evil thoughts – and hence the cow products are also expected to be without bad vibrations. Consuming cow products would also help us not succumb to ill thoughts that are not ours.

In Hinduism, being vegetarian is considered to be a good quality, while meat-eating is not considered as a bad quality. Instead, vegetarianism is encouraged. One reason is that man should not be arrogant to assume he is superior and entitled to feed on other animals.

Man is seen as integrated with nature, so non-violence is a must. Cow is a peaceful animal, and very useful to man. Provides milk for nourishment for infants and adults; so pretty much like a mother. Out of gratitude, you do not kill a cow for food (especially your tastebuds!)

Why are other animals not so sacred? Well, all animals are sacred; but it would be hard to tell everyone to go vegetarian. So you keep certain off your plate on the dining table.

Do you know there are some Arabs who will never eat camel meat, cos the camel is a slogging beast that transports them in the desert?

So it all boils down to gratitude, humaneness….

Hinduism makes a big deal about being humane in a violent world.

Well we can find answer in ancient medical science. Our ancestors were very wise and had great knowledge of all aspect of life. If we observe eating habits of cow, it eats very selective grasses/shrubs. These grasses/shrubs which cow eats has more fodder value than any other plants. Which results in healthier milk. Cows eating selection can be used as a test to find high fodder value grasses for other castles.Such selective food habits results in high nutrition milk. Cow milk has many usages in Aayurved. It is used as a base for many Aayurveduc medicines. It also has different usages on different temperatures.
Gomutra has antiviral properties. Gomutra also has many medicinal usages in Aayurved. Its the best first-aid medicine on any kind of injury o external body. The Gobar is the best fertilizer for land which actually increase productivity without any side effects like chemical ferts. It can also be user as fuel. People also say that our ancestors knew that cow has some divine frequencies around her which helps calm your mind. Such an useful animal should not be killed mere for meat, its insanity. So the cow was promoted to God category by our Wise Ancestors. They did the same with all ficus trees which had immense importance in local ecology. We have very little knowledge than our ancestors.

Once upon a time, human beings were one with god..there were no much questions and ricule over dharma and the sacred animals of god..but now, living in the separateness of the truth, which is God too, some can question on why buffaloes are not considered sacred? This kind of questions will only be imposed by the ones who are not God realized and respect God in any forms and live in the sense of seperateness and ego consciousness, tries to be smarter than the truth..the wise, are the enlightened ones, living in the presense of the God, that being purified with transcendental knowledge, incurs no sins…the fools impose wrong questions and ridicule over dharma and God, incurs sins as the actions were born of selfishness and ignorance!

This is why I don’t like people from my own country. You don’t even know your f****** history or religion or tradition. Cows were holy to Hindu’s because they saved Lord Krishna helping him cross a river when he was a baby and I do not believe this and that is why I also eat them. Tasty animals and provide much nutrition.

Cow and the products derived from Cow viz. Ghoksheera, Ghodadhi, Ghomutra, Gomayaa, Ghoajyam are considered as very sacred and to be treated as holy things.

Cow is treated as the cow of Deva loka viz. Kamadhenu i.e. the devinnely mother next to our humanly mother. Some times, when the so called mother dies immediately after giving birth to a child, the motherless child is given only Cow’s milk which will not harm in any case the delicate child, more over it will help in the gradual growth of the child.

The five items derived from the Cow as listed above, are mixed and given three times to a boy when he attains the age of brahmacharya i.e. at the time of adorning him with the sacred thread made of pure cotton, gold string and silver string amidst chanting of Vedic mantras by learned vedic scholars followed by the sacred exhortation by the parents along with the vedic scholar in the right ear of the boy – the great mantra Gayatri.

By wearing the sacred thread he takes a new birth (second birth) and by drinking the five items as above, he body and soul get purified to chant the mantra regularly morning, noon and evening.

So, the cow’s milk has got very good effect in changing the mind of human being to the right direction. By drinking cow’s milk, the persons is being brought up with a balanced mind and his conduct and character is of a cow “Satva”.

I eat more a holy cow then a unholy chicken that can only gives an egg.
When i want to live holy like my holy Krishna, i need to do, live, talk, think and eat all the holy things that will help me become holy as my Krishna god. So why can i not eat what makes me holy ? I do and know and believe that eating a holy cow will holy me too for god Krishna.

Besides all the reasons about cow the pregnancy cycle of cow is same as of a human mother
She carries her child for 9 months
Also the cow milk is the only milk suitable to a child after his/her mother’s milk

Anti religious people or so called “Seculars” will never understand this topic :)
